A New Year By Jerry Ousley

A New Year
By Jerry Ousley

After three hundred and sixty-five days (three hundred and sixty-six during a leap year), we mark the beginning of another year. It celebrates the completion of the Earth's orbit around the sun. We have made another revolution. I suppose that's something to celebrate considering that we have ridden this ball of rock and dirt all the way around a burning inferno a ball of flaming gas, without becoming toast.

We don't think about it very often; we really take it for granted from day to day, how that God has so perfectly kept us safe on this small planet, suspended in outer space. We go to our jobs, do our tasks and have fun on the weekends. Some turn to church on Sunday morning and spend a little time thinking of God, but then many can't wait until the final "amen" has been said so that they can race to their favorite restaurant for Sunday dinner.

We don't think about the life that God has placed on our rock in space, the third out from our sun. So many life forms exist! Scientists are yet discovering new species nearly every day. I read not long ago that a frog with fangs was found somewhere in the South Eastern region of Asia. We'd never think of getting bitten by a frog would we? All these centuries on this planet and we are still finding new life forms that God created during that very first week after forming this planet. That's amazing to me.

Most of us don't give much thought to all the stars suns themselves many of them, having their own system of planets slowly making their circle around them. What it must be like out there!

We don't think about the violence that goes on underneath our feet as rock shelves shift and move unless their activity reaches the surface of the earth and we experience an earthquake. The weather is most often a nuisance to us unless it unleashes wild tornados, hurricanes, cyclones, or typhoons. The vastness of the ocean isn't given much place in our thoughts until an underwater eruption or earthquake occurs and a giant tsunami rushes somewhere to shore bringing devastation and death.

All these things outer space, life, the weather, and the movement of galaxies and solar systems, take a backseat in our thoughts unless one of them directly affects us. To dwell on them and their dangers for very long can be depressing and scary.

But this New Year I would like to present you with another thought. It isn't a new idea or a profound recent discovery. In fact it is as old as time. It is that in the midst of the vastness of all these things God has control of them all. The wildness of nature, the uncontrollable destruction by storms and the violence of the earth all happens because we mankind, introduced sin in the midst of all the cosmos. Some call these things "Acts of God" but in reality they are the results of the "acts of man."

Still, we can come to a place of peace in the midst of it all because of the very God we have sinned against. This great God who has created all these things the planets hurtling through outer space, the strange and wonderful life-forms found on this egg-shaped ball we call Earth and the forces of nature we so fear; He has made them and though uncontrollable by humanity, He holds them in His hands. The fact is that He loves us each and every one of us. He wants nothing more than for us to come to Him; to tell Him we are sorry for our sin in honest sincere repentance. When we do He will take a break from all the schedules of the planets and take a moment to touch us with a forgiving hand.

It has always amazed me how that all these forces were put second place by God. He put us first you know. Even though we are but a tiny spec on a tiny spec in outer space, all the suns, stars, and planets were dismissed during creation by one statement. Genesis 1:16 simply says, "And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: He made the stars also." Did you hear that? Speaking of the sun and the moon, when it came to the vastness of space it simply and in so many words says, "Oh, and He made the stars too." Why does He not emphasis this vastness more? It's because you and I were more important to Him. He loves you. This year, come to Him. You'll discover the best year you have ever had.

The Wonderful Christmas By Irvin Rozier

The Wonderful Christmas
By Irvin Rozier

Genesis 33:5: “And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the woman and children, and said, who are those with thee? And he said, the children which God has graciously given thy servant.”

Children are a gift from God. He had blessed me to have two wonderful daughters and a good son. When their mother left in 1986 I became a single parent to six, eight, and eleven year old children. My heart grieved for them as they missed their mother. After the Lord saved me, I began to pray for them. One of my prayers that December 1989 was that they would be blessed to have a wonderful Christmas, including spending some precious time with their mother. Shortly thereafter, my children’s mother called and asked if she could have the children a few days. She would get them about four or five days before Christmas and bring them back Christmas day. I readily agreed. She asked if I would drive them halfway. She lived in Atlanta so Dublin was the agreed meeting point.

The children were all excited about this rare visit with their mother. They had not spent much time with her since our separation. I scraped together a few dollars to give to them to spend, we loaded up and headed out.

Well, you should of seen the look of happiness on their faces as they hugged and greeted their mom. She had been such a wonderful mom to our children before. She always made sure they were well fed, clothed, clean, and hugged and loved. She roller-skated with them, read to them..they were her life. Tragically, the Devil can destroy and take away a mother’s concern and love for her children–whether it’s drugs or other methods.

As they drove away, I sat in the car and cried. My tears were a mixture of joy for their happiness of being with their mom and sadness and grief for the losses they had experienced. I loved these children that God had given me and when they hurt, I did too.

What I didn’t tell the children was that I had given them all the money I had. My car’s gas needle showed empty and it was 110 miles back home.

It was Sunday morning about 10:30 a.m. as I began to drive back home. I said, “Lord, I guess I’ll run out of gas within a few miles but I’m trusting you in this situation.” About three miles down the road, I saw a small sign displaying an arrow pointing left to a small country church. The Lord suddenly spoke to me and said, “Go to that church.” I said, “Okay, but I’m not dressed very well (I had on old blue jeans, a tee-shirt and tennis shoes).” The Lord replied, “Go just like you are and don’t even concern yourself about what others may think about your clothing. I know what is in your heart.”

I drove up to that church, got out of my beat up old Toyota and went inside. Services had already started and several heads turned to stare as a badly dressed stranger entered. I sat down on a seat and after a few songs, the preacher preached on the famous faith chapter in the Bible, Hebrews, Chapter 11.

The Lord anointed this pastor as he preached. It seemed as if most of the words he spoke were directed at me. I needed that encouragement at that particular moment! Thank you Jesus! After service, the preacher was led to ask for testimonies. A few dear saints stood up and testified. Their testimonies were very uplifting.

Suddenly the Lord spoke and said, “Irvin, get up and testify.” As I stood, I wiped some of the wrinkles from my blue jeans and began to speak. As the Spirit of the Lord anointed me, every eye in the congregation was on me and every ear was attentive. I told how the Lord has directed my footsteps to that church, how the sermon and testimonies had encouraged me, and how happy I was that my children would be spending a few days with their mom. I asked for prayer. At this request, the Godly pastor asked his little flock to gather around the altar and especially pray that not only my children but other children from broken homes would have a happy Christmas.

After the service, I slowly walked to my Toyota. An elderly woman came up to me, shook my hand, and told me my testimony had touched her heart in a special way. After I withdrew my hand, I looked in my palm and saw the folded five dollar bill she had given me. Gas money to get home! God will provide!

When I got home that Sunday evening, a friend of mine called and asked if I would drive him to a city about 50 miles away. His truck had quit and it was too cold to drive his motorcycle. I said, “Okay, I’ve got to pick up a few pecans to sell to get a few dollars. My children aren’t here so I’m free to go.” He was a nurse and was going to work two 16 hour shifts during Christmas. He said he was renting a hotel room and I could stay there while he was working.

It snowed hard the night before we left. Not only had it snowed, the temperature had dropped and black ice had formed on the roads. As I slowly drove that old Pontiac down those icy roads, we saw many vehicles in the ditch. People in South Georgia are not equipped to drive in these conditions. As I pulled up to an intersection, I applied my brakes to stop. I hit a patch of black ice and said to my unsaved friend, “Brace yourself, we are going to crash.” Sure enough, we did, but the Lord protected us both, only a small dent in the car. We were stuck in the ditch so we went looking for a kind-hearted farmer to pull us out.

Shortly we found one. We asked for help. He pulled on his brogans, walked to the shelter, cranked up his John Deere, and quickly pulled us out. We tried to pay him, but he refused. Thank God for people like this kind farmer.

We arrived safely at the hotel, checked in, then went and got a bite to eat. This was two days before Christmas. I then drove my friend to the nursing home and went back to the hotel and went to sleep.

I woke up early Christmas eve and said, “Lord, I sure would like to go to church this morning. Show me where to go.” I picked up the paper and saw where a church was having an early morning service.

The Lord spoke and said, “Go there.” So I went, and although only about 30 people were there, it was a sweet service. I was blessed by the words spoken about our Savior’s birth. After this was over I said, “Lord, I sure would like to go to Sunday school. Please show me where to go.” Well, the Lord led me on a road out of town and in the country. It surely was beautiful scenery: gently rolling, snowed covered hills, the whiteness and brightness of everything. As I was driving, I thought about Christmas coming up. My friend was going to pay me $50 for driving him. Not much to buy Christmas for my children. While I was thinking about things, the Lord interrupted my thoughts with a command, “Turn left here on this dirt road.” I did and about two miles down that road, I came up to a beautiful little country church sitting on a little hill surrounded by snow covered pine trees. The Lord said, “Here is where I want you to go for Sunday School.”

The parking lot was full of cars, and I felt a warm and peaceful presence about this little place. As I walked in, I was warmly greeted and directed to the right Sunday School class. The people there were friendly and warm-hearted. They made me welcome, and they were genuine, not fake like some places I’ve been. I thought to myself, this is a praying church that God loves.

I didn’t stay for church services because the Lord directed me to go on back to the hotel. I did as He directed. After I had eaten dinner, I went back to the room and laid down to take a nap. Around 2:30 p.m. , the Lord awoke me and said, “Go on over to the nursing home.” I obeyed.

I found my friend and talked with him a few minutes. While we were talking, I heard the sound of singing. I told my friend I was going on down there to listen as they were not only singing Christmas carols, but also singing old hymns.

As I entered the area where the service was being held, I recognized many of the folks conducting the service. They were the ones I had Sunday school with that morning. Nothing was mentioned in the Sunday school class about a nursing home service. They recognized me and invited me to join them. I did as I enjoyed the presence of the Lord.

After the service, I said my goodbyes and walked down the hall to the nurse’s station. In a few minutes, the preacher came up and said, “The Lord told me to give you this check.” It was for $150. I had only asked the Lord for some money so I could buy my children something for Christmas. He tested my faith by ordering my steps. I passed; thank God!

We came back home, and my friend paid me. My children came home late Christmas day. I was so glad to see them! I had missed them so. I told them I didn’t have them much for Christmas, but we were together. Thank you Lord for this wonderful Christmas memory!

2009 National Day of Prayer By Dana Chaffin

2009 National Day of Prayer
By Dana Chaffin

The 58th annual National Day of Prayer is scheduled for Thursday May 7, 2009. "Prayer America's Hope" is the theme taken from Psalm 33:22.

"May your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord, even as we put our hope in you."

This day is for all Americans to unite in prayer for guidance, protection, and strength for the seven centers of power: government, military, media, business, education, church, and family. The 7 centers of power cover every citizen.

Government - As America faces an economic collapse, pray that the leaders of government would seek God for the answers they need to get the economy going in a positive direction. Pray that God would install in office men & women who are committed to serving with integrity. Pray also for the judicial system to be righteous in their decisions & to search out the truth in every case. Pray that our leaders have the devotion, principles, & wisdom of our Founding Fathers. These men made their values evident in many documents from their time like the U.S. Constitution & the Declaration of Independence.

Military - Pray for troops, their protection, their families, & for comfort to families that have lost loved ones. Pray also for their safe return home. Ask God to place honorable people in their path to deliver hope & spiritual strength.

Media - Pray for TV, newspapers, radio, musicians, actors, & athletes. They are a powerful influence, especially on America's youngsters. Pray that they realize the impact they have on not only teenagers, but also young children & adults. That they may understand that self image is worth lots more than selling the latest product. They should present their stories, broadcasts, & lives with truth and integrity.

Business - Pray for companies to conduct business in an honorable manner, employees to be loyal, & trustworthy CEOs. With the tough economic times, pray for those who are facing layoffs, pay cuts, & company closings. Pray also that God lifts up Christian workers as His ambassadors in the workplace.

Education - Pray for teachers, administrators, & students. Teachers rise up to be positive role models for their students & co workers. School administrators need to make moral decisions about curriculums. Pray that all involved will see that schools are safe, educate, and build kids up. Christian students will find His favor in influencing their fellow students that may be hurting or lost.

Church - Pray for the body of Christian believers, pastors and other Christian leaders to be obedient to Christ and withstand pressures of the world. Pray that the body of Christ, Christian leaders, Missionaries, & their families find favor when sharing the love of God. That God's people unite in boldness to spread God's Word. Also, pray for revival throughout our nation.

Family - Pray that families come together in love for each other & for Christ. The relationships in the home should be positive, disciplined, & God-centered. Parents should be leaders in the home & set good examples. Pray that fathers stand up to be spiritual leaders of their home.

Congress has been calling the public to pray since 1775, when it asked citizens to pray for wisdom in forming a nation. President Lincoln and President Truman were recognized for calling citizens to unite in prayer. In 1988, President Reagan permanently declared the 1st Thursday in May as National Day of Prayer.

Public events for National Day of Prayer are scheduled in most cities across the U.S. To find an event in your area check out http://www.nationaldayofprayer.org or contact National Day of Prayer Task Force in Colorado (719)531-3379. If you are unable to attend a NDP event, plan a personal event with co-workers, loved ones, or by yourself.

A CHRISTMAS STORY By Richard L. Provencher

A CHRISTMAS STORY
By Richard L. Provencher

"I am sad today," said Caw-Caw, a young crow.

"Christmas is almost here and I have no gifts to give. Besides, who wants a noisy crow around? All I'm good for is making strange noises."

"That's not true," answered Bushy-Red, his squirrel friend.

"Get away pest, is what I hear when I'm around other birds, with pretty colors," moaned Caw-Caw. "And their voices sing like the joy of sunrise."

Bushy-Red waggled his tail. "I understand. You're feeling poorly," he said.

"No you don't!" shouted Caw-Caw. "Look at me, a feathery nothing, only able to make weird sounds. If only" Caw-Caw whispered.

"If only, what?" Bushy-Red asked. They were resting alongside a trail in the woods.

It was so peaceful with snow covering fir trees. If only Caw-Caw stopped complaining, thought squirrel. Then he could notice beauty around them.

If only I wasn't such a chubby bird dressed in black, thought the crow. How nice it would be to say something besides, Caw-Caw." all the time."

"But you're such a kind bird," said the squirrel. "And your nest is the neatest one around. You even chase away pests from the farmer's fields."

"That's really nothing," said the crow, flicking his wing.

"Well it's more than nothing to the farmers," said Busy-Red scampering up a large maple tree. "Come on up."

'Oh, all right" said the crow. He flapped quickly and joined his friend on the upper branch.

"Now relax," said the squirrel to his sad friend. Then he opened his furry mouth and began to sing:

"Oh my friend, you're in such misery.

And you're just a black feathery bird

with little to say, except, CAW-CAW."

"Christmas can be such a lonely time. It should be filled with lots of happy sounds," said the crow. "If only I could help someone be happy, even with a voice like mine."

Busy-Red wasn't listening, and he kept on singing:

"Oh the sad crow moaned and groaned,

little else could he do. Good thing he did

not have to carry around heavy shoes, too."

While two friends thought about Christmas to come, others far away were busy making plans.

In Belgium, little mice prepared stockings filled with treats. There was cheese and special sweet bread, called "cougnolle."

"Maybe my voice needs practice," said the crow. "Instead of being shooed away, someone may like me."

But, his friend Bushy-Red, the squirrel, wasn't listening

to him. He was too busy singing:

"Oh the crow is a friend, indeed. Please

help him not dread the sound of his voice.

We all know, it's the only one he has, you see."

Then Bushy-Red looked at his friend, and said, "In Brazil, chicken with rice is the usual Christmas treat." (And that far away, as special music came, turkeys began to dance).

"In France a Christmas tree is decorated with red ribbons and white candles," said Bush-Red." (And far away, deer and other creatures chased moonbeams in the twilight).

"In Germany," said Bushy-Red, "one little piggy is picked to ring the family bell. It's a signal to open their gifts." (And far, far away, many squeals of happiness are expected).

"How can it be you are so wise?" asked the crow. He

leaned from the branch trying to see if a wise owl was

whispering these facts and ideas into his friend's ear.

But, Bushy-Red wasn't listening and began to sing:

"Over here, Christmas is a time for turkey treats

and trimmings. Polish sausage and Lasagna too.

So be good or else Santa will zoom on through."

"I get it," said the crow. "Christmas is really a happy

time. And we should learn to share it too."

"That's the spirit," said Bushy-Red. "He sang once again:

"Tick-Tock. Tick-Tick-Tock. I surely know

Christmas is almost here, in a few moments

we will share, and be happy and yell for joy."

Crow stretched to his full feathery size. He looked

left, then right, lifted his chin, and let out a loud cry.

Instead of "Caw-Caw," Crow heard a beautiful sound, coming from deep within. Words hurried through his beak and began with:

"MERRY CHRISTMAS!"

-The End-

Crocodile Tears & Buffalo Wings

Crocodile Tears & Buffalo Wings
By Marilyn Schnepp

Have you ever heard

A sparrow complain

That robins sport red vests

While his suit's mundane?

And surely the burro

Has legitimate gripes:

When he says he "feels drab

Next to a zebra with stripes."

And what about the camel

With his crooked spine;

Surely you've heard him

Whimper and whine?

Have you heard the buffalo...

Moan and cry

As he begs God for wings

So he can fly?

Or the beaver wishing

For a bushy tail,

While the bushy-tailed fox

Wants a house like a snail?

No, my friend,

Nature's quite content;

It's only Human Beings

Who weep and lament.

We alter our hair color,

Tan or whiten our skin,

Then starve ourselves silly

Just to be pencil thin.

We pierce our navals,

Lips, tongues and eyes;

Plus dye, paint and tuck

Our hair, nails and thighs.

In fact, Man's so disgruntled

With "WHO" he is,

That God only knows

Which is a Mister or Miz.

Now, you and I know

We were formed out of sod;

And magnificently designed

In the very image of God.

So think for a moment...

How we must break God's heart

Every time that we alter

His best Work of Art.

OVERCOMING SEXUALLY ORIENTED SIN

OVERCOMING SEXUALLY ORIENTED SIN
By Anthony Osei Boateng

INTRODUCTION

Sexually oriented sins entail a special collection of sins which thrive on the sexual drive of the Christian. These sins are special because they thrive on the sexual passion (which is very strong and can get out of control), which God has placed in man to be shared in marriage. Most Christians find it very difficult to overcome sexually oriented sins. These include fornication, adultery, pornography, masturbation and other sexual perversions.

HOW TO OVERCOME THEM

Sexually oriented sins come about when one's inherent sexual passion upon being triggered at the wrong time and for a wrong purpose goes ahead to commit the sexual sin. We can't ask God to take the passion away because He placed it in us for us to share it with our spouse. The devil however tries to trigger this passion God has given us at the wrong time and for a sinful purpose. Due to the strength of this passion and the fact that it is in us, the Bible admonishes us to "flee fornication" (1Cor. 6:18). Hence the more time you spend pondering whether or not to do it the stronger the passion becomes, increasing the possibility for one to fall into the sexually oriented sin.

The only way to avoid sexually oriented sin is to flee. Fleeing entails an accelerated creation of a gap between the Christian and the opportunity to commit the sexual sin or the avoidance of situations that would cause a Christian to commit a sexually oriented sin. The battlefield for overcoming sexually oriented sin is the mind. The Bible says that "be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind" (Rom. 12:2). For example, one can physically ignore an initial temptation to fornicate with a man or woman, but a continual thought of the features of the man or woman or imagining a sexual encounter with the person, may cause the person to eventually fornicate with the man or woman he or she initially ignored. Hence it is important to have a pure mind always. One's mind can make him or her fall easily into sexual sin when it is saturated with a lot of pornographic material.

Another powerful tool in overcoming sexually oriented sin is the Word of God (Bible). The devil can easily make a temptation to commit a sexually oriented sin look so unsinful. I wasn't surprised at all when a lady Sunday school teacher asked me if it was a sin for her to have sex with someone she wasn't married to. One wouldn't think twice about such sexually oriented sins if he or she is firmly grounded in the Word of God. Remember that when the devil tempted Jesus, he tried to make those sinful acts look so unsinful by quoting the Bible; hence we should be firmly grounded in the Bible, as Christians.

Finally a useful tool in overcoming sexually oriented sin is prayer. God can cut down one's temptations to fall into sexually oriented sins if he or she asks. The Bible says "and lead us not into temptation" (Mat. 6:13). The Bible also admonishes us to ask, and it shall be given unto us (Mat. 7:7). Hence if we ask God for the strength to overcome sexually oriented sins especially, when confronted with such a situation, God will be faithful, and He'll grant us the strength to overcome it. I can testify to this so many times. MAY GOD GIVE YOU THE STRENGTH TO OVERCOME SEXUALLY ORIENTED SINS AMEN.

Advice from SOC's; Teen Advice Column (Friends)

Advice from SOC's; Teen Advice Column (Friends)
By Nancy Quinn

Dear SOC's: Since I'm a Christian, should I only hang out with Christian friends?

SOC's: It is important to surround yourself with people who follow Jesus and live their faith for Him since hanging out with other Christians helps your own faith to keep growing. Your church and youth group are great places to develop friendships and grow in your faith.

However, just because someone at school isn't a Christian doesn't mean you shouldn't associate with them. You can show them the love of Christ with your words and actions, and you may not only make a new friend, but you may change their life for eternity!

The Bible tells us to be in the world, not of it. Even though we're around worldly things and people, we don't belong to the world and shouldn't be influenced by it. We should stay firmly rooted in Jesus and let our lights shine for those who are in darkness. How's YOUR light shining at school?!

May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. I'm also blessed with the opportunity to be a contributing writer to http://www.CalicintoRanch.com, http://www.OpenDoorMission.org, Full Spirit Magazine and http://www.JournEzine.com - wonderful ministries that reach others for Christ!
